The history of Tom Ford
At present, there are a number of different designers who have managed to gain fame. Popular designers such as Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani and Calvin Klein are popular examples of designers that have managed to attain huge levels of popularity and success. These designers have managed to revolutionize the face of the fashion industry, and have come up with classic designs that have really captured the imagination of the audience. Amongst the mix is Tom Ford, probably one of the most successful designers in the world right now. Ford started in the field of fashion and media quite young, and learned his trade very well before he finally kicked off with his own ‘Tom Ford’ brand, which began back in 2004. Here’s a brief history of how it all began for one of the most successful designers in the world right now:
Tom Ford was born back in 1961, in Austin, Texas. His parents were realtors. He spent his early childhood in the outskirts of Houston, Texas after which his family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico at the time he was 11. He graduated from high school in 1979, after which he dropped out from Bard’s College. After this, he moved to New York City and joined a course of art history at the New York University. Only a year had passed since his enrolment when Ford dropped out of university in order to make up time for utilizing yourself in television advertising campaigns. At a certain point in time, Ford was acting in around twelve different campaigns of national advertising all at one time, and then joined an interior architecture course at the Parson’s The New School For Design.
It was in New York when Tom Ford began visiting the most popular nightclub in town, Studio 54, where he also realized that he was gay. He then moved to Paris, where he developed a love for fashion. He worked primarily in sending out clothes that were used for photo shoots, which was the reason for his love of fashion. His final year at The New School was spent studying fashion, yet he still qualified with a degree in architecture.
After graduation, Ford would not reveal that he had received a degree in architecture, but would reveal that he attended the New School. After moving to several companies, Ford finally entered the fashion world in a concrete manner when he joined Gucci, which was faltering badly at that time. Gucci was looking for a brand overhaul and wanted to bring about something new to its women’s readymade clothing line. Ford was hired as the women’s readymade chief designer in 1990, and after a short while only, his role at Gucci began to expand extensively.
Within just six months, Ford had begun designing clothes for men too, and then moved to designing shoes thereafter. He became the design director in 1992. By 1994, Tom Ford had become the creative director of Gucci, and had become a popular name in the fashion world. A testament to his work at Gucci can be seen from the fact that when he joined Gucci, the fashion house was virtually bankrupt. By the 1994, Gucci was valued at $3.4 billion, and by the time he left in 2004, Gucci Group’s value was soaring at $10 billion. After Gucci acquired Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford became its creative director too.
In the April of 2004, Ford however left the group after the CEO and Ford failed to reach an agreement with the PPR bosses over the artistic control of the company. In the same year, Ford started his own company, the Tom Ford brand. The beauty collection as well as the eyewear collection was the first to debut back in 2005, and the first menswear store opened up in New York City, with critical acclaim from some of the most popular designers, a couple of years after. At present, the Tom Ford brand is undergoing a strategic selection and expansion move, which will see 100 different Tom Ford retail stores standing freely in various parts of the world, in the next ten years. Throughout his career in fashion, one thing that really fascinated Ford was fragrances. Having released several fragrances during his time at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, he used his experience and skill in order to create several fragrances for men.
The Tom Ford eyewear and sunglasses brand has since gone on from strength to strength, and is one of the most popular eyewear brands at present. The Tom Ford Beauty brand was the first luxury beauty brand of the 21st century, and provides a classical collection of gorgeous clothing.
